Essay And What I Say - 552 Words

The Great Depression lasted from October 24, 1929 until the economic recovery of the 1940s. On October 29, Black Thursday, the stock market crashed heavily, and continued to fall sharply throughout the coming weeks. As a result, the United States and the world were thrown into a decade of poverty and unemployment. The depression affected all sectors of the economy. Farm owners and agricultural workers suffered from falling crop prices. Businesses failed from a lack of investment support and a decline in the ability of the masses to afford their products. Banks closed their doors as the nations citizens hoarded their money and defaulted on loan payments. Unemployment and abject poverty enveloped the nation. Herbert Hoover was President†¦show more content†¦The nation mobilized, and it appeared the economy might improve. However, the economy remained troubled, and criticism of the New Deal rose up in the government and in some political circles. A number of Supreme Court Rulings effectively dismantled the primary mechanisms of FDRs plan. Undaunted, and gaining a public mandate with the Democratic successes in the 1934 midterm election, FDR set forth the Second New Deal in 1935. This program reaffirmed the administrations commitment to public support of the nations troubled people. Great steps were taken in attempts to solve the unemployment problem and stimulate economic recovery. The legislation passed during this period would be the framework of the New Deal throughout the remainder of the decade. The economy showed some signs of recovery but was set back by the 1937 recession. After that, FDR enacted few additional measures to cope with the depression. Finally, economic recovery took place under the war economy of the early 1940s, with levels of poverty and unemployment returned to pre-depression levels. The Depression brought marked changes to the political and entertainment culture of the United States. A culture of dissent and disillusionment produced ample political outlets, such as Huey Longs Share Our Wealth program. Dissent and disillusionment sparked by the depression affected popular culture as well. The 1930s were the golden age of radio. Online Gambling Enforcement Act Of 2006 - 1203 Words

Back in 1996, the explosion of online casino gambling swept the world. The United States had been a large part of this, and many gamblers had turned to online casinos for all of their gaming. For many years, these casinos continued to be played unabated. Unfortunately, back in 2006, legislation was passed that made it slightly difficult for online casinos to continue to operate. This legislation, sneaked in by piggyback through the Safe Port Act, would be named the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, and it became a thorn in the side of the online gambler, the online casino, and all payment processors there in. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, or the UIGEA, had, in a nutshell, prohibited banks and payment processors from processing transactions that would correlate to online gambling. This has not only complicated loading accounts, but also withdrawing. While USA online casinos have continued to operate, they have had to use payment processors that would circumvent these restrictions. Sadly, the UIGEA was not even set to go into effect until December of 2009, thought the implications of the legislation had fall out that would be nothing short of catastrophic for many online gambling companies, especially those that relied heavily on the United States market. The UIGEA had hamstrung many of the operations around the world that utilized the American market in order to stay ahead in profits, all the while keeping losses to a low. Michelangelo Buonarroti and Religion Essay Example For Students

Michelangelo Buonarroti and Religion Essay Michelangelo showing his religion Michelangelo painted frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and made a sculptor of David. Both the painting and the sculptor point to the great deal knowledge Michelangelo has of the Bible. On the Sistine Chapels ceiling he painted scenes from the book of Genesis, and David the person comes from the first Book of Samuel. Michelangelo has background with the Christian Church and did many sculptures and painting for the church. The religious influence of the church could not be avoid by Michelangelo. He had been introduced to it very early in his life. Sistine Chapels ceiling was a very religious painting Job done by Michelangelo. The Astatines ceiling shows Michelangelo knowledge of Bible events. It has Prophets and Sibyls painted on it, which are very religious figures. It shows the beginning of time to the Flood with Noshs Great Ark. The sculpture of David was done for Saint Peters Cathedral. It gave new meaning to life for the people of Florence. David was not only thought of as a Messiah by the Old Testament Prophets, but also by the people of Florence. He brought hope as a person and a statue. Michelangelo not only showed that religion was important to him through his works, UT also amortized part of the Bible. The Sistine Chapel is one of the most visited places in the world, and the Colossal David is one of the most well-known sculptors in the world. These two great works of art affect whatever people look at them. Without knowing it people get a brush of religion. Michelangelo shows his view of religion to people even after he has died. Michelangelo lived a life of art. From the day he was born to the day he died he lived art. Michelangelo was one of, if not the best sculptor and painter ever to touch foot on this earth. He any painter made a shining in religious art it was Michelangelo. The Sistine Chapel is located in the Vatican City. This is where Saint Pewters Basilica was built. The Sistine Chapel was a private room for the Pope. Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to paint on the ceiling. He almost turned it down because he thought of himself as a sculptor not a painter. He took the painting Job on to prove to people that he could paint even though he did not like to do it. Through the works of the Sistine Chapels ceiling and the statue David, Michelangelo amortized his Christian religion. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in a town called Cappers, a region f Tuscany, near Florence. Michelangelo father was Ladylove Bonaparte Simon, and his mother Francesca Imitation del Sera. Michelangelo mother decided to send the baby Michelangelo away to be looked after for a while by a stonecutters wife, because his dad didnt have a Job and his family life was difficult. Michelangelo said his love for stone came from the milk of stonecutters wife who nursed him as a baby. Michelangelo wanted to be an artist but his father did not agree. When Michelangelo was seven he was sent to a basic school, he was always sneaking off and drawing something. After many long arguments with his father, Michelangelo finally convinced him that sculpturing and block carving are different. Michelangelo was then allowed to study the arts. Michelangelo father put him in the workshop of the painter Domenici Garlanding. After two years Michelangelo studied at a sculpture school in the Medici gardens. He wanted to Join a bootleg, which is a workshop where young men could learn art with masters. At age 13 he was allowed to Join, and shortly thereafter was invited into the household of Lorenz De Medici, the Magnificent. Because Michelangelo was so good at sculpting, a fellow dent, Pitter Thronging, got Jealous and punched Michelangelo in the nose , giving him a prize fighters nose that makes him so recognizable in his portraits. When Michelangelo talent became known, he no longer paid for the lessons, instead he was paid. Michelangelo produced at least two relief sculptures by the time he was sixteen years old, the battle of the features and the Madonna of the stairs. This showed that Michelangelo had achieved a personal style at a very early age. Most sculptors have not finished learning about style, let alone have heir own style by the age of sixteen. Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564 at almost 90 years old, he was hard at work on a statue. Religion Essay ExampleThe Cathedral asked Michelangelo to sculpted a Colossal David . Michelangelo accepted the offer and guaranteed to complete a Colossal David for the Cathedral in 2 years. Around the chunk of marble he obtained for this feat he built a shed, which was locked at all times. He did not launch immediately into the stone as legend had it, making chips fly off violently as he struggled to set free the image he saw within. For many weeks he examined and measured his material to see what pose it could accommodate. He made sketches of possible positions, and carefully detailed drawings from models for the parts of the figure. He tested out his image in wax on a small scale. Then, and only then did he pick up a point and a mallet to make the first rough spillers fly clattering to the floor. Although it occupied him nearly three years to complete, it was worth the wait for the people living in Florence. Michelangelo phrased his first titan in terms of a civic guardian, symbol of righteousness. None of his later masterpieces so profoundly affected his fellow citizens. The author Gilbert writes: In the precision of its anatomy one can recognize the scientific spirit of investigation of the Florentine; in the forms, which are full of strength, and in the noble, proud ace, one finds the heroic concept of man as a creature who is free and master of his own destiny. Technically this statue marked a change in Michelangelo development. In a single work he achieved the difficult transition from normal scale to the colossal without a flaw, setting back the chin slightly so that it would not cut off too much of the other features from the spectators view, building out the nose and forehead. Religion in David David comes straight from the Bible. In the following lines, from Book one of Samuel, Chapter 17, verses 49 through 51, it tells how David came to slay the giant Goliath: 9 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 1 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath therefore, and slew him, and out off his head therewith . And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. Religion in David is undeniable. He is a part of the Bible therefore a part of religion. A religion which Michelangelo learned about since he was an infant with the stonecutters family. David was sculpted having the look of fear, as if the sculptor knew what David was going through at that exact point in the battle with Goliath. The religion Michelangelo shows through David is immense. Conclusion Both the painting of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and the sculptor of David reflect the knowledge that Michelangelo has of Pagan religion, but mostly of the Bible. Clifton Harry Levy writes: Religion was the supreme interest of the leaders in human thought during this entry, when the Church played so large a part in the destiny of nations, and very naturally any and every artist who felt the pulse of his time was impelled to prove his power by the skill with which he presented sacred subjects. Art was religious because the people were religious In other words, art could make or break a nation. Michelangelo was trying to make Italy, by giving them the best religious art you could find. In a way the art helped the people survive, fight, and showed them what they could believe in to get away from the agony of living a life of torment. These works illustrated points from the Bible in such a magnificent manner, that they have changed life from the day they were put on display to the present. Religion was, is, and always will be a powerful thing.

Mario Peshev Interview - CEO of DevriX and Man of Many WordPress Pursuits

Welcome to the newest entry in our Pirate Interviews series! Its been a bit since our last talk with a WordPress expert, but here we are again bringing you another set of insights, this time coming from a technical persons point of view. Mario Peshev shares a wealth  of awesome ideas, so this is definitely one you wont want to miss!Before we get started, though, make sure youve checked out our previous interview, in which we learned more about  Viktor Vincejs experiences with blogging and digital nomad life.I remember attending Marios presentation last year at WordCamp Europe 2016 in Vienna. He talked about remote work and how to manage it efficiently. I loved it! And the interesting thing is that it wasnt the topic itself that grabbed my attention, but Marios relaxed attitude in general. Relaxed, cheerful, making jokes, Mario Peshev looked more like he was out for a beer with friends than  holding a talk in front of 500 people (or more).In this interview, I got  the chance t o find out more about Mario  and his professional background. I learned that hes extremely dedicated to his work (no exaggeration extremely is the right word), he puts passion into every task he takes care of, and he doesnt mind if his career occupies most of his life. Because for him, working is not an actual job. Its just what he loves to do. And he does it successfully, if you ask me. Hes handling a team of 30+ people at DevriX, a technical and business growth consulting company he founded back in 2010.When hes not in charge of his diverse entrepreneurship and development activities, Mario  is contributing to the WordPress core, reviewing themes in the WordPress.org repository, and helping the Bulgarian WordPress community grow stronger. In case that wasnt enough, hes also the co-founder of WordCamp Sofia, the leader of the WordPress national meetup in his country, and co-organizer of WordCamp Europe (when time allows him to get involved).Lets hear the rest from the man hims elf in this Mario Peshev Interview: When and how did you start working with WordPress? Is there an interesting story here?Mario Peshev:My background is in software engineering for the enterprise mainly Java EE and other platforms for high-profile clients (telecoms, multinational chain stores, banks). When Ive started freelancing full-time in 2008, Ive been juggling between 7-8 projects coding in several different programming languages which wasnt as efficient or productive at the end.In 2010 I joined my first start-up in the WordPress field. I had former experience building a PR software on top of WordPress (way before custom post types were a thing) and got fascinated by the full capabilities of the WordPress software. Weve already had a small team in-house and switched entirely to WordPress which allowed us to dig deeper in the internals, build a large set of plugins and even start submitting patches to the WordPress core.Youre in charge of an entire company, keep seminars and wo rkshops on many continents, write blog posts regularly, contribute to WordPress. How do you manage to get everything done?Mario Peshev:I tend to work a lot as I want to be involved in every step of the process. I participate actively in the sales and onboarding process for new clients while discussing the long-term roadmap for each project with our customers. Then I assign most of the actionable tasks to the rest of my team and focus on overseeing project progress and deliverables based on the milestones that we have on a monthly basis.Since our headquarters are in Europe and most of the team works in EU hours, I work with the folks in our team during day time. In the evening I often coordinate the planning with our US clients. I take some breaks in-between and schedule interviews, podcasts, guest posts and others in a structured manner, planned ahead.Its fairly dynamic but the benefits of switching between projects and various types of activities is quite energizing 🙂About contributing to the WordPress core, whats the most challenging thing youve done so far? Whats the biggest satisfaction you get from this?Mario Peshev:I have over 30 patches in core and most are smaller fixes or adjustments. There were two examples that I particularly enjoyed working on:A Core patch that I got fixed during an online session on debugging. I spent a couple of days tracking a bug upfront and writing down the workflow of analyzing the problem, reproducing it, and fixing it. My session was 45 minutes long 20 minutes in theory, tools, and handy functions, and another 20 minutes of reproducing the bug live, coding a patch and submitting it on Trac. The bug was fixed a week later and demonstrated a practical showcase for new contributors.A complex patch regarding a massive performance problem listing hierarchical post types in the dashboard. Ive partnered up with a knowledgeable developer from Brazil and weve worked together on releasing a complex patch with several unit t ests. Initially, I had that patched for a client whose dashboard loaded for over 45 seconds which went down to 2 seconds after applying the patch.Seeing my production code working for websites struggling with specific use case scenarios is quite satisfactory, and understanding the internals of major APIs helps with my day-to-day development activities.From the large range of services your company is offering, which one is the most difficult to provide? Also, which one is the most requested by the clients?Mario Peshev:Since were a full-service agency nowadays, coordinating ten or more team members working on a large project that requires design, development, marketing and business planning may be exhausting, but the benefits for the business are unbelievable. 90% of our business comes from long-term partnerships in the form of WordPress Retainers, which is the main business model weve selected for DevriX.Most of our clients come for one-off projects and later on understand the busine ss needs for a solid team that could scale their platform and be a reliable partner as the business grows. Some of our accounts reach out precisely due to our commitment to their business model and the willingness to support their business and technical needs in the long run.Whos doing things that are just cutting-edge and incredible in the WordPress space right now?Mario Peshev:Lots of folks innovate in different areas. Ill skip the name-dropping as I cant praise all innovators in the WordPress space, but there are some brilliant developers, engineers and entrepreneurs working on SaaS solutions together with us, on scaling WordPress Multisite, building caching plugins, eCommerce platforms, LMS and CRM solutions, as well as other business applications that WordPress businesses can take advantage of.Describe the WordPress community in one word.Mario Peshev:Diverse.From all the things youre currently doing, whats the one thing you enjoy the most and why?Mario Peshev:Education. I try t o prepare my efforts in a structured manner that could be replicated and understood by different parties.I strive for nurturing professional and personal traits in everyone I work with from our team through our clients up to my readers and partners everywhere across the world. That comes in different forms and shapes be it mentoring sessions at the office, process documentation, guest posts, interviews, coaching calls, and everything in-between.Ive been active with training courses and have over 10,000 hours of training activities over the past 11 years, but blocking time completely for 4-6 hours during a training session prevents me from being available for everyone else. Which is why Ive transformed my workflow into a more async one that allows me to multitask and work on several things at a time.How do you define being successful?Mario Peshev:Success is a state of mind. Its something that every single person out there should define for themselves. Mario Peshev:I smoke hookah at home or play World of Warcraft with my wife. Or take our dog for a quick walk, combining some fresh air with brainstorming.Whats the one thing youd like to change about WordPress?Mario Peshev:I would focus on simplifying the core and decoupling some components. I loved it when Links became an external feature available as a plugin. Nowadays, WordPress is being used as a blog, simple CMS, high-scale media platform, a multisite network, SaaS engine, application frameworks and an enterprise-grade web content management platform.Working on a thin layer that allows for easily detaching components would be excellent for businesses who dont need a certain set of features coming out of the box.What are your recommendations for a WordPress novice?Mario Peshev:Pick a specialty and become great in it. Be fully aware of what types of services you offer and state it clearly. Regardless of your specialization, focus on improving your skills. Dont limit yourself in WordPress either even if your target audience is WordPress users, take a sneak peek in other communities and learn from them. Theres so much knowledge in different areas that could be applied in WordPress as to enlight its community.And that wraps up our Mario Peshev interview! We learned that professional and personal goals dont necessarily have to occupy different  areas of your life, but on the contrary working on what you truly love will make these two areas  bind so beautifully until they become one. And this is what makes people happy after all.Do you have any questions that youd like to ask our guest?Also, if you have any suggestions for our next interviewee, please let us know in the comments.

Lord of the Flies-book v movie essays

Lord of the Flies-book v movie essays Following the norm is just too hard. Movies do not allow audiences to create their own imaginary island with their own group of boys. In the novel Lord of the Flies, there are many things that lead to the obvious time developing characters, mentally stimulating and systematic dialogue that allow the reader to interpret the book to their liking. This puts Lord of the Flies book superior to its 1990 motion picture. Noticing that a movie is subject to a very small bracket of time, it unfortunately has to leave out a lot of things portrayed in the twelve chapter book. Because of short attention spans, people get distraught and uncomfortable when a movie drags on. With a book mind you, a person can pause or put down the story and pick it back up at their own leisure. Time is critical when editing a movie, one must very keen to allowing eye candy to continuously flow from the screen. The book allows your always active imagination to create a imaginary scenario centered from you own likes and dislikes. Characters development in books is crucial to the visualization or interpretation of the reader. In a movie situation, the audience is forced to see it from a uncomprehensible state of another persons perspective or interpretation. Ralph for instance could have been a selfish, whining baby to one person, and a sensible leader to another. In movies Ralph is forced to be a character interpret ed by one persons active imagination. Hence not everyone relates, and the movie is only good to those who think the same narrow minded way. Hats off for the person who could develop a mentally stimulating movie which could feed the active imagination better than a wide open book. For a movie to be good it has to be visually stimulating. Most people like the fact that a two hour movie will allow the director to do the thinking for them to keep their attention on the eye candy. ...

The glob is happening on the first line, as the * characters pulls the filenames into the files array. files *; Then you simply use a foreach loop to print out the files in the array. You can include any path in your filesystem between the marks. For example, say your website is in the /var/www/htdocs/ directory and you want a list of all the files: files /var/www/htdocs/*; Or if you just want a list of the files with the extension .html: files /var/www/htdocs/*.html;

OSHA Standards Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

OSHA Standards - Essay Example In addition to this the training should be safe for all parties involved and others. Training is supposed to be both theoretical and practical with evaluation of performance. The standard goes ahead to outline the various topics to be covered by operators some being operating instructions, differences between trucks and automobiles, steering and manoeuvring, stability and capacity among others (OSHA, 2011). Operators are also required to undergo refresher training in stances where they are found to perform unsafe operations, near-miss accident situations, a different truck is to be operated, changes in workplace conditions and many others (OSHA, 2011). General evaluation of operators is to be conducted after every three years. Approval should go with certification showing that the operator has undergone training and evaluation. This standard is good in ensuring that accidents and injuries related to powered industrial trucks are minimised. However, it is not an adequate standard basi ng this on certain aspects; refresher training seems to be only necessary in case an operator portrays some level of notable incompetence. It further stipulates that refresher training should be conducted after every three years.

Quantitative Article Critique Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Quantitative Article Critique - Essay Example It is easily identified in the text, and the authors logically build up to the topic as a significant and viable research topic. The quantitative research method is appropriate for this study because quantitative data can best measure this problem. The hypothesis is also explicitly stated in the research, and it sufficiently expressed the study variables and population. The questions chosen are very much related to the concept behind this research, however, they are not sufficiently supported by related studies. The literature review for this research is integrated into the discussion portion, and therefore the studies are not logically organized in the paper. The studies chosen are appropriate and are from primary sources; however, most of them are not current and are more than five years old. The research design is appropriate for this study. Threats to its validity are discussed, but how these threats were handled was not discussed by the authors. Information from this research is sufficient for replication based on the detailed research methodology. However, there was not enough comparison made with other studies in order to enhance the interpretability of the findings. The conceptual model chosen for this paper relates spinal needle orientation to reduced stay in the hospital, eventually leading to cost containment in surgical procedures. This concept fits the research focus because it succinctly covers the idea or the ‘concept’ behind the research. The population of interest and sample for this study was sufficiently described. Inclusion and exclusion criteria sufficiently narrowed down the sample population. Methods to minimize biases in the sample population were undertaken based on participants excluded for protocol violation and missing data. Data gathering methods used for this paper were appropriate in measuring the research variables. Data to be gathered from the sample population was

Transportation Essay Example for Free

Transportation Essay Transportation and environmental issues are opposite in nature since transportation deliver socio-economic benefits are great, but at the same time impactingenvironmental transportation system. On one side, supporting transport activities growing demand for passenger and cargo movement, while on the other, transportation activities associated with increasing levels of external environment. This has reached the point where transport is the dominant source of the pollution emission and multiple effects on the environment Complexity of the problem that has led to much controversy in the policy environment and the role of transport. see more:essay about transport The transport sector is often subsidized by the public sector, particularly through the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure which tend to be independent of the access. Sometimes, the public interest in the mode of transport, terminal and infrastructure can be odd with environmental issues. If the owner and the same regulator (different branches of government), then there is a risk that the rules will not be effectively observed. It can also lead to another extreme where compliance would lead to an inefficient transportation system with the cost of subsidies. The environmental impact of vehicle pollution burning fossil fuels such as natural gas and gasoline used for transportation the way we produce harmful chemicals, among them carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which is a major pollutant and contributor to global warming. Over 150 years ago, cars, airplanes and power plants have been producing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere enough to raise a higher level than ever before. Single car emissions are generally low, but added to the emissions from the millions of vehicles per day used to create a huge impact on the environment and air quality. Car pollution reaching water pollution, noise pollution, air pollution to global warming, to give effect to human health. On-road motor vehicles not only release carbon dioxide but also nitrogen oxides, which contribute to the formation of acid rain. They are also a precursor to the formation of ozone (smog), which damage the respiratory system and damage the plants. In the West, about 6% of the population will die due to air pollution, it is not surprising that the car industry is responsible for up to 80% of urban air pollution. With globalization and modern technology invading every corner of the world, it is a known fact that air pollution and congestion are increasing at an alarming rate. Some of the recommendations about how to address this problem encouraging the use of public transport. This essay will analyze the strategy to encourage people to use trains and buses to commute to work. For a start, it felt that one way to stimulate the use of public transport to make use of private cars expensive. For example, tolls have been introduced successfully in a number of places in cities around the world. This example clearly shows that the use of private cars on the highway is expensive compared to public transport. Therefore, introducing tolls and other taxes using private cars is a good strategy to prevent people from using personal vehicles. In addition, limiting the number of parking permits in urban areas help to prevent people from using their private vehicles. Take for example the Metro Sydney. Last year, a study showed that the city experienced a sharp drop in traffic caused 30% increase in the price for parking permits. This clearly demonstrates the fact that, the price increases made it difficult for people to use their personal car to go to the cities. Thus, the increase in the price of parking permits is a good way to curb congestion and encourage use of public transport. Following the appearance, it is clear that by increasing the cost of using a private vehicle is an effective strategy to encourage people to use public transport. Thus, this will help to reduce congestion and air pollution to some degree.

1910-1920 :: Essays Papers

1910-1920 Between the years of 1910 and 1920, the Silver Era, the United States experienced many firsts. For the first time in history, women were becoming more politically powerful. In 1916, Jeanette Rankin held a seat in the U.S. Congress, making her the first woman ever to do so (Sheet Music...). Four years later in 1920, the nineteenth amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote in political elections. The eighteenth amendment was passed as well, beginning the short-lived prohibition of alcohol. In 1917, the United States became involved in the First World War by declaring war on Germany, three years after its commencement in 1914 by. Also in this decade, the first Trans-Atlantic ocean liner, the Titanic, sunk in 1912, causing over 1, 500 people to die. The United States was also in the process of industrialization. Industries were built and electricity was the new form of power. Electric lights became available and the first movies were made. "By 1916, 21,000 movie houses were testimony of a new industry" (Hacker and Zahler 99). Automobiles became prevalent and that caused the need for roads to be built: "The early growth of the automobile industry wakened a new and much stronger demand for surfaced roads" (Hacker and Zahler 101). Henry Ford was a major contributor in propelling the automobile industry. He improved the assembly line and mass production of parts. "By 1914, the automobile industry had developed such characteristic features as standardization of parts, minute subdivision and mechanization of labor, and even the assembly line in manufacturing" (Hacker and Zahler 100). The United States experienced great social and industrial change on a national scale as well as international scale. One of the primary major world events that took place in this decade was World War I. This began in 1914 when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. The U.S. didn’t get involved with this war, however, until 1917 and stayed involved until it’s ending in 1918. Increasing technology contributed heavily to the fatalities of this war with the inventions of deadly explosives, steel tanks, and poisonous gas (SF Timeline). This double front war for Germany was finally held at a standstill in November of 1918. A peace treaty was signed on June 28, 1919 at Versailles, France, ending the devastating four- year war in Europe. Another important world event that heavily affected the future of the world was The Bolshevik Revolution.

Frankenstein: A Critical Analysis

A Critical Analysis Author-centered Reading Early 19th century gothic novel, Frankincense, has provided an excellent base for an author-centered analysis, given the prominence of Shelley circumstantial Influence and strong symbolism. Born at the turn of the 18th century in London, Mary Shelley was exposed to venerated authors and their works from a young age. Showing her ability and promise early on In life, she went on to write a number of acclaimed novels, Including Valier and The Last Man.Shelley Imagery compares to the best of 19th century Romantic literature and has helped establish her as one of the time's retreat authors. (Academic, 2009) Through Frankincense, I have Implied Mary Shelley to be strongly opposed to the Idea of ‘playing god' and transgressing the human Limitations. She has used strong Juxtaposition to highlight the horror of the monster, contrasting It to the sporadic scenes of beautiful valleys and mountain ranges.Through her use of this technique, it is c lear that Shelley herself is disgusted with the monster, though she has attempted to justify the actions and behaviors of it throughout. Her personal disgust and rejection of the wretch comes through in the behavior of the characters, with only one, an old, blind man ever coming close to accepting him. As Victor says, â€Å"There can be no community between you and me; we are enemies†. (Shelley, 2000, p. 82) Though the monster had done no wrong, initially, and only desired to be loved, â€Å"l was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend† (Shelley, 2000, p. 2), he was accepted by none. It seemed thus, that Shelley was trying to show that even if man successfully reached god-like achievements, he and his creation would not enjoy any form of acceptance as the heart of man opposes him to such ghastly and horrific actions. At the beginning of Chapter 5, it is seen that Frankincense calls his creation the wretch' before it had even awoken, How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavourer to form? † (Shelley, 2000, p. 1) Although these words were technically spoken after it occurred, in Frankincense's recount to Walton, Shelley could have chosen to refer to the monster in an objective manner at this point, instead in this subjective way. By doing this, however, the monster Is portrayed as lesser than human, not worthy and is degraded In the eyes f the reader, without any actions of the monster being recounted. As said, Shelley Juxtaposed the monster to the scenic landscapes. This Is technique Is evident here as well, though not in exactly the same manner.The next scene after Frankincense creates the monster, has Frankincense Joyfully re-unlit with Clerical. Recounting the scene between Frankincense and Clerical, Shelley uses exclamation marks to dramatist the situation In order to draw a starker comparison with the previous scene. Then, as quickly as the mo od turned Joyful, It became drastically solemn as the conversation turned to Victors exploits. Nature has also played a large part in the novel and is key to understanding certain elements.Set in the 18th century in Switzerland, the novel's locale draws key inspiration from Shelley circumstance at the time, being that it was conceived in Switzerland, only a few years after it came across strongly in the novel. â€Å"the moon gazed on my midnight labors, while, with unrelated and breathless eagerness, I pursued nature to her hiding places† (Shelley, 2000, p. 39) Shelley has personified nature quite strongly and through words like these, Shelley has established nature as an all-powerful, god-like being.This further enhances the view that she was bringing across the point that no one should attempt to breach nature's omnipotence. In this way, she has likened nature to an all-powerful God. Shelley also re-enforced the power of nature – God – through her language â⠂¬Å"As I stood at the door, on a sudden I beheld a stream of fire issue from an old and beautiful oak which stood about twenty yards from out house; and so soon as the dazzling light vanished, the oak had disappeared, and nothing remained but a blasted stump† (Shelley, 2000, p. 26).What Shelley has done for nature though, she has done the opposite for man. Mary Shelley has brought across humans as being incompetent, insensible beings. When the wretch leaves evidence of Justine killing Will on her person, she is arrested and does not receive a proper trial, being lynched by members of the public. Later on, in an encounter between the wretch and Frankincense, the monster says, muff accuse me of murder; and yet you would, with satisfied conscience, destroy your own creature. Oh, praise the eternal justice of man! † (Shelley, 2000, p. 2) Through this, it would seem that Mary Shelley had become disillusioned with man-kind and its constant endeavourers to ‘play-god', en in advances within science and medicine. Shelley was likely influenced by the times she was in, through influential figures like Jean-Jacques Rousseau who criticized the view that man should exert his influence and superiority over nature by ‘Playing-God'. Shelley was a strong advocate for Rousseau, opposing others like Henry Bacon, who were of the view that Frankincense was of at the start of his time at the University of Inconstant.The Author-centered approach has evolved over the past century and continues to do so, most recently with Farther' Death of the Author of 1967. Instead of viewing the author as the sole influence of the texts' meaning, the contemporary view sees persons taking interest in the author; his/her background and circumstance to discern the link between them and their work (QUA Syllabus, 2011) I first applied Authorial Intent with special consideration given to Wimpiest and Beardsley Intentional Fallacy of 1946.This provided a base for analyzing Frankinc ense without being clouded by the presumed design or intention of the author which according to Wimpiest and Beardsley, â€Å"is neither available nor desirable as a standard for Judging he success of a literary work of art† (Wimpiest and Beardsley, 1946, p. L) Upon reading Intentional Fallacy I saw that Frankincense was a ubiquitous representation of the canonical life of Mary Shelley, not Just the intended meaning she desired. The theory states that, â€Å"an author's stated purpose cannot determine all the legitimate readings that may be made in his/her text. (QUA, 2011) Thus, in keeping with Intentional Fallacy, I recognized the relationship between the author, Shelley, and her text. As I said in my first paragraph, â€Å"Through Frankincense, I have implied Mary Shelley to be tryingly opposed to the idea of ‘playing god' and transgressing the human limitations. † The use of Pullet's â€Å"criticism of consciousness† theory helped establish that the u se of literary devices and her language to bring this point across displays that, as I said in my reading, â€Å"Shelley herself is disgusted with The Monster†.The author-function, specifically the characteristics of attribution and valuation, as introduced by Factual, also led my reading. Valuation states that an author is not defined purely through his/her discourse but, â€Å"It results from a complex operation hose purpose is to construct the rational entity we call an author† (Factual, 1977). Thus I constructed my view of Shelley from her â€Å"profundity or ‘creative' power†.This is seen all throughout my reading, though most profoundly in my final paragraph, where I state that I am of the view that Shelley â€Å"had become disillusioned with man- kind and its constant endeavourers to ‘play-god† However, the complications of this being perceived as Universality may be questioned as different readings are drawn from Frankincense. The char acteristic of Attribution also showed that my previous dead and knowledge of Mary Shelley as a widely acclaimed author and prominent figure, whose work has lasted till current day, influenced my construction of her.The work of Brooks and Pollute, used in conjunction, was a prime dictator in the course of my reading. The main theory I applied was that â€Å"literature is ultimately metaphorical and symbolic. † (Brooks, 1947) Thus, a closer analysis of the words Shelley used revealed the Pantheism in Frankincense. As I said in my reading, â€Å"Shelley has established nature as an all-powerful, god-like being†. I understood the reason Enid this better after a study of Spinning's work, based on Descartes' dualist theory. Spinal brought into play that God, instead of a physical, anthropomorphism's being, is in fact the composition of nature.Pullet's theory of â€Å"criticism of consciousness† â€Å"embodiment of the state of mind† of Shelley (Pollute, 1971). This is important as it guided me to become conscious of Shelley ‘cogitator' and its impact on my construction of her as an author. This type of Close-reading is advocated by New Criticism (Henderson and Brown, 1997), further allowing me to analyses the construction of Shelley sentences and word-use, to detect symbolism and metaphors. This came through in the third paragraph of my reading, when referring to Shelley use of the word Wretch' so early on.Applying Brooks' theory helped me identify the deeper symbolism in this. I was thus able to recognize that the referral to Victor's creation in such a subjective manner had deeper roots, not Just showing Victor's personal disgust but also causing the monster to appear unworthy of ordinary humans â€Å"†¦ The monster is portrayed as lesser than human and not worthy and is degraded in the eyes of the reader†¦ (Reading) I was also able to analyses Shelley use of punctuation, to further enhance the Juxtaposition between the somber references to the monster and the happier circumstances.Brooks' and Pullet's theories also have elements of the text-centered approach in them, with this approach claiming that the text is place where meaning is found (QUA, 2011, p. 4). Here the subtleties between Historical and New Criticism become evident, with old criticism embracing literature as a form of authorial self-expression, Romanticism (Henderson and Brown, 1997). The shift in thinking though of authorial self-expression to inner symbolism and author omniscience makes it hard to fully identify and articulate Shelley intention. My construction of Shelley, though, seemed at first to be invalid with T. S.Elitist's Tradition And The Individual Talent, which espouses that when critiquing a work, one must take into account the other authors of that time (Adams, 1971) In Elitist's words, â€Å"we pretend to find what is individual, what is the peculiar essence of the man†(Elliot, 1921). This would mean that my b elief that the language in Frankincense symbolizes Pantheism is wrong as it is based purely on Mary Shelley. However, upon closer analysis, I realized that in fact, it supported my conclusions. The key example I would like to present is that of Wordsmith and Coleridge, founders of the Romantic Movement in England.Both of them were strong supporters and advocates of Pantheism, helping to bring Rousseau work to recognition through their own writings. Both were also frequent visitors to the Godwin household (A+E Networks, 2012). Thus Shelley would have grown up around the work of these two men, the Venerated authors' I mentioned in my first paragraph. What I saw here, was sound proof that Intellectuality, or as said by Elliot, â€Å"importance of the relation of the poem o other poems by other authors† (Elliot, 1921) played a large part in Frankincense.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Since it's first introduction in the year 1983, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) has very rapidly become a fundamental tool for improving the health and human life. PCR was developed by Dr. Kary Mullis, who was at the time working for Cetus Corporation as a chemist. PCR is the quick and efficient method for making unlimited copies of each and every inch of DNA. It can also be adapted to allow amplification of RNA samples as well as DNA samples from any type of organism. PCR is simplified into a 3-step process, which is repeated for 30-40 cycles. The procedure begins with the first step called denaturation. In the phase of denaturation, the structure of the DNA is altered. The double-stranded DNA melts and exposes into two pieces of single-stranded DNA at approximately 94 degrees Celsius. Transitioning into the second step called annealing or in other words, pairing up together. At a temperature of 54 degrees Celsius, the primers cool down and join to the single-stranded DNA or â€Å"template†. The double-stranded DNA then attaches to the polymerase and starts to shoot out copies. Finally during the last stage of the PCR process known as elongation or extension, the polymerase works it's magic. At 72 degrees Celsius the DNA building blocks are paired up with the DNA primers, to create a double-stranded DNA molecule. After all the processes are completed in one cycle round, a single portion of double-stranded DNA is finally enlarged into two separate pieces of double-stranded DNA. However, as the cycles repeat themselves, more and more clones are generated and the number of DNA copies are intensified exponentially. The procedure of doing a PCR is more vital than we may fathom. It has been found to cure and diagnose genetic diseases, locate bacteria and viruses, DNA fingerprinting, study paternity, biological relationships, and human evolution. All in all, PCR has become widely known to biologists, DNA labs, and many other forensics laboratories. PCR is also one of the quickest testing methods to many diseases, for example The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, commonly known as HIV. HIV is a very difficult disease to find and eradicate. The earlier tests depended on the presence of antibodies in the human bloodstream. When performing the antibody test, there may be no results until weeks after exposure to the virus. Nevertheless, when performing a PCR test results appear much faster, and as little as one genome among 50,000 host cells can be easily detected. PCR can efficiently detect the forensics of HIV, rather than the antibodies contained in the blood. The same goes for Tuberculosis, which are also complicated in sampling from patients, PCR tests speed up the results so that precautions may be taken as soon as possible. PCR testing is one of the many ways that can assist in detecting several diseases, and yet PCR is very vital to the human life.

Unexpected Situation Essays

Unexpected Situation Essays Unexpected Situation Essay Unexpected Situation Essay (It has a lot of grammar mistakes) Except for the rain thats been crashing for hours and the house-shuddering wind that howls through the darkness outside, its an ordinary evening at my house. Then comes a knock on the door. Im not expecting anyone. I look through the peephole, but the condensation from the wet night air has fogged it to uselessness. So I simply open the door and find a familiar man, I cant recognize his face. I notice the fire that made the sky goes red, the air feels smoky and thick. Ive always thought the preternatural is all in my head until I see this punch of people with decomposing skin lurching and teetering around the street. My heart beats against my chest and it feels like its going to break through, stomach pains, and constant shaking. All noises seem amplified, and my brain Just freaks out; I cant believe whats going on out there. I feel like the whole world is swirling, find it very hard to catch a breath, and I get a very dry mouth. The man steps in and close the door as I start crying, he hold me and make me lay on the sofa and bring me water. Are you okay? He asks me, Dont worry it was a panic attack I replied Whats going on out there? . Recognize his tattoos when he starts cleaning himself; the shark on the side of his head I chose which stands for survival; we had a car accident and hardly survived at the age of 18, and the rose on the back of his hand. How did my high school best friend become so handsome in 10 years? Tall black hair and full of tattoos; I can barely see his skin. I look out of a window carefully, waiting for him to explain this calamity. I see cadavers thrown on the pavement and abominable creatures fevering the bodies, enjoying the taste of human meat, and finding the blood fountains entertaining. I bet it smells like sludge and rotting flesh outside the house. What is the purpose behind spreading an epidemic and create zombies? The sight is blood-curdling. I start crying again and Ronnie tries to calm me down, he says in a confident voice The zombie apocalypse is starting. The sun disappears as the sky gets darker. Do you have enough food and water? Seems like we will stick here for days until the military handle the situation.

Response to Questions Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Response to Questions - Assignment Example The middle range according to them are essential in nursing practice as it helps in widening nursing practice as well as shaping nursing profession. It enables nurses provide efficient and quality healthcare, and services, with gender variation and the requirement for acknowledging minorities are areas of concern. Shelly and Miller in chapter 15 are also concern with enhancing the nurse practice by incorporating research and development. They have argued that research and development will ensure quality health care service provision that considers the diverse cultural backgrounds of patients. According to Shelly and Miller, the future of nursing theory will be guided by population demands and will be ensuring it meets the interdisciplinary as well as the integrative character of these demands. The source of the future nursing theory will be practice, research and development. The main similarity between McEwen and Wills chapter 21 and chapter 15 in Shelly and Miller are that, they ar e al concern with enhancing nursing development. They are all emphasizing on developing situation practice theories and increasingly embracing the evidenced based practice. The course â€Å"Nursing Theory Advanced Practice† has really enlightened me in nursing practice. ... Accordingly, it has enabled me to realize that, nursing knowledge encompass nursing research, evaluation, monitoring, prediction, as well as assessing client’s reaction to clinical services and practices (Afaf 1997). The course has enabled me to realize that nursing theory is like any other profession, it requires standards of practice that will ensure there is unitary provision of quality service as well as ensuring that the services are centered on accepted nursing process (Taylor &carol 2001). It has enabled me realize that nursing practice and theories are important in researching on patient responses to various nursing practice and thus essential to the way we perform clinical services currently and in future. It is due to the fact that clinical and nursing practice is centered on individual’s health status, how sick individuals react to nursing practices is important information for evaluating and assessing nursing practices. The course has widen my nursing knowle dge and it has helped to shape the characteristics of the nursing profession as well as in authorizing nurses to offer efficient and quality healthcare, and services in which gender variation and the requirement for acknowledging minorities are areas of concern (wills &Melanie 2002). The reason why nursing theory is important is because it provides the values that support the practice and assist in generating additional nursing information. Nursing theory provides nurses with a sense of identity and assist patients, administration as well as other medical care professionals to realize the exclusive involvement that nurses do contribute to the medical service provision (Wills &Melanie 2002). Another important fact is that, nursing theory assists clinicians and nurses to recognize their functions and

The Benefits of Using The Robotics System In Industrial Area Research Paper

The Benefits of Using The Robotics System In Industrial Area - Research Paper Example This is because findings have shown that robotics is capable of reducing the cost of production, improve production efficiency, product quality, and reduce accidents and injuries in manufacturing industries. This paper will discuss the benefits of using robotics in the industrial area. The history of robotics dates back to 1954 when George Charles Devol invented the first industrial robot called the Unimate. This was later followed by the formation of the first robot company called the Unimate by Devol, and Joseph F. Engelberger. General Motors is the first automobile company to install the Unimate robot for dying casting, spot welding and handling in 1956. Since then, many manufacturing companies have implemented robots to replace human labour. International Federation of Robotics reveals that many companies today are increasingly adopting robotics in their workforce (42). This has particularly been witnessed in industrial and manufacturing spheres in different countries of the enti re world. However, findings show that only developed countries in the world have embraced the use of robotics to do various tasks in industrial such as machine operations and welding among others. For instance, the European Robotics Technology Platform (EUROP) reported that about 6.5 million robots were already in use, in different companies and institutions all over the world by 2007 (2). The same report also estimated that the number could rise to about 18 million by the year 2011. Japan is currently the leading country in terms of robotic adoption. International Federation of Robotics indicated that more than half of the world’s robots are made and used in Japan (46). However, several other European countries are also increasingly adopting the technology. A study has shown that the technology is increasingly adopted by countries that have an aging population such as Japan and Germany. For instance, a study conducted by Mckinsey in Germany predicted that Germany could face a shortage of about six million skilled laborious in the next seven years (Jeschke, Liu, and Schilberg 85). The same applies to Japan whose population is aging very first, according to Europ (5). However, the common denominator for the adoption of robotics in industries is based on the benefits that the technology offers the industries where they are installed for doing work. As earlier stated, robotics have been found to be beneficial in industries mainly because its installation helps in reducing costs in a company. This is seen from the factor that robots do not require to be paid hourly rates, as is the case with workers (Jeschke, Liu, and Schilberg 86). This implies that the salary that could have otherwise been used to pay workers will be used for other purposes such as maintain ace (International Federation of Robotics 51). It is reported that, apart from the maintenance cost, a robotic manufacturing is only paid for once, which is very cheap compared to having to employee a worker who will be demanding salaries each and every month. Furthermore, unlike workers, robots do not demand salary increments that might increase the manufacturing cost. It is also a matter of fact that the initial cost of installing a robot in an industry may be daunting. However, its return on investment can be realized very fast once it has been implemented. Research indicates that a robot has the capacity to generate a return on investm

An event that is a part of your experience Essay

An event that is a part of your experience - Essay Example My mom warned me about feeding the dog especially when its beef bones just bought from the store. On that day, my determination was to do the opposite of what my mother has instructed me. I was driven by the fact that my parents clearly instructed me not to feed the dog. As I walked to our backyard my heart started to beat harder and harder, my stomach grumbled, my legs felt weak almost not able to walk, my hands felt like they could not carry the few pounds of beef. As I got closer and closer to the tree where my dog was resting, I got more and more anxious. Snowy almost looked like a lion looking for its prey; he slowly lifted its head off the ground as he caught the smell of the fresh beef, which still had a strong scent of blood. He stood up almost about to attack me but, we both knew hurting each other is not a priority. I came closer and closer, I opened the bag and I saw Snowy drooling all over the place ready to eat but looking up at me as if asking for my permission. I said â€Å"go ahead boy it is for you; you look hungry† gave him a little pat on the head and took a few steps back. Noticing a bone a little far away, and my dog tied I thought it could not reach it, so I pushed the bone where he could reach it. I started tossing the bone back and forth, as I waited for Snowy to eat. Suddenly his animal instincts took over as he lurched to protect his old bone. Within the next 5 seconds, the unexpected happened. My dog bit me, and my leg was bleeding. I did not feel the pain at all; it was almost as if a doctor gave me a shot, no pain at all just shocked. I looked at my dog straight in the eyes I could see his regret, his pain and anger as well as a tear. I loved my dog, but at the same time hated him for putting me in this situation. Until then I never realized that dogs could cry just as humans did, but that showed me that not only that Snowy loved me but also felt the same pain I do when it gets hurt. That

Human Resource management and Personnel management

Human Resource management and Personnel management Human resource management is one of the modern methods, which is improved from personnel management with the inclusion of modern strategic techniques. HRM is a traditional system for management and it can be widely used in many organizations, HRM treats human resource as an intellectual capital or human capital for an organization and it is mainly focused and give to the human resource whereas personnel management treats human resources as same as the other resources of organization such as machine, money and material, etc. personnel management is mainly task oriented. Some of the characteristics difference lies among the personnel management and HRM is given in below tabular format. Personnel management is inflexible and it follows the top down approach whereas HRM is flexible and use bottom up approach. In HRM, the organization structure should be organic and it has long term perspectives whereas, in PM the organization should be mechanic and concentrated on short term perspective. HRM provide greater flexibility with employees, whereas PM are very strict and inflexible with the human resource and they follows the strict rules and regulation of an organization. HRM is reactive but personnel management was proactive in nature. Therefore for any Successful organization, HRM is very essential strategic method than the PM to manage and utilize the manpower in an optimum level (Bratton and Gold, 1999). HRM is one of the parts in an organization task, which describes how much manpower is needed and how should they be engaged with the activities, how they effectively used and managed. Human resource management is mainly integrated with all other company management process.HRM process can be illustrated below: As a Vodafone company manager, I will suggest the Head of the Department to recruit Human resource manager/specialist to manage the valuable human manpower in an effective and efficient way, which wills helps to improve our organization performance and productivity. 1 (b) HR Manager Roles Activities Vodafone HR Manager Role Vodafone main goal is to add the more value to the company compare to their competitors and to improve employee performance. The HR manager role is a function of four variables: motivation, ability, situational contingencies and role perception (McShane, 1995). The responsibilities of HR Manager are to manage the human capital/manpower and assess their performance and rewarding their workers. As a Manager, I suggest some of the roles of HR manager and it can be illustrated in below figure. Strategic Role Administrative Role Operational and employee advocate Administrative Role: This role mainly concentrates on employee data processing and record keeping, maintaining employee database and retrieving process. With the help of modern technology and outsourcing method, Vodafone human resource process has been computerized. This is reduce the cost, workforce and improve the efficiency, time and number of employees. (Robert John, 2008). Operational and employee advocate role: Human Resource manager can also be called as Morale Officer as they mainly concern with crisis management, even though HR main role is to solve the human resource problems. Human resource manger should be assisting with operating manager in order to perform his/her operating role in tactical nature. This role is mainly to identify the business policies and program to be implemented (Robert John, 2008, P10-14). Strategic Role: HR mangers are mainly concentrating on the organization realities and dealing with the future needs which include performance, rewarding and workforce planning strategic. This role can also known as contributing at the table (Robert John, 2008, P10-14), because HR are contributing to the strategic decision that is very much useful for organization success. Some of the characteristic difference between Strategic role and Operating role are given in the below tabular format. HR Activities: The main HR activities is to gain best contribution from the manpower of the company, this can be attained by the way of treating the human resource or manpower. Their activities can be affected by the external environment factor (i.e. PESTEL Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal) and HR managers should have capability to handle these environmental changes. As I manager, I have consider that the below mentioned activities are the major activities of HR Manager. Recruitment Selection: It is one of the HR managers main activities to analyze and identify the human resource requirement for an organization, this analyze will helps to fulfill the job vacancy by placing the right person at the right time and at the right place. HR Development: One of the activities of HR manager is mainly helps to improve the employee performance, productivity and ability by providing effective training. Performance Management: This will gather the detailed information of the employees behaviour while working with superior/coworkers, his/her performance, punctuality, and contribution to organization goals. This monitoring process will helps the managers in order to motivate or improve the employees by giving effective training and awareness. Rewarding: It is mainly based on the employees performance and they are compensated by announcing their promotion, rising the incentives and pay, etc. Employee relationship: The main objective of these activities is to ensure and maintain the strong and effective relationship among the high level and low level employees. This is very essential in order to update, communicate and develop the organization HR policies, rules, procedures. As a manger, they mentioned roles and activities are very important and should be carried out effectively in order to improve the organization as well as employee productivity to achieve the overall organization goal. 1 (c) HR Models There are different types of HR model available for Human resource management and are listed below: Harvard Framework Matching Model Linear Strategy Model Ten C Model Triarchic Model Competitive advantage Model Narrow Broad Perspective Business Process Model Guest Model The above mentioned Model are basically categorized into two HARD and SOFT Model. As a Vodafone Manager, I preferred two models namely Harvard Framework Model and Guest Model. This can evaluated below: Harvard Framework Model: This model is developed by Beer et al (1984) and this model can also be referred as Soft HRM Model. Te traditional framework of Harvard model mainly consists of six major components and it can be illustrated in below figure: (Michael, 2006, p4-7) Harvard framework model details description is given in below tabular format (Michael, 2006, p4-7) In this Harvard Framework model, HRM policies, rules, practices and procedures are mainly based on the organization vision, mission, objectives, strategic and goals (Srinivas, 2005, P2-6). Human resource policies and practices are affected by business internal and external factors. This mainly rely on employer-employee relationship and it mainly considers the interest of their stakeholders and analyzing how the stakeholders interest is associated with the Vodafones Objectives and this can mainly inclined by two important factors like stakeholders interest and situational factors. Harvard model helps Vodafone HR manager in plan their business strategy and propose two important approaches which are given below: HRM policies are defined by considering the stake holders interest and environmental factors (i.e. good fit between HR Policies and organization environment). Objectives of HRM policies are to achieve 4Cs: Competence, Commitment, Congruence and Cost effectiveness technique. Guests model: Guest Model is developed by David Guest for Human Resource Management, which includes some articles and exercise that can be used by the organization context. This consists of six components and it can be listed below: HRM strategy Set of HRM policies Set of HRM outcomes Organization Behavioural outcomes Performance outcomes Financial outcomes This model has granted close links between business strategies (such as Differentiation, Focus and Cost) and HRM strategy. The main objectives of this HRM practices should be planned to lead to Human Resource Management Outcomes of High manpower commitment, high quality, highly flexible employees. Employees commitment is mainly considered as a very important HRM Outcomes. This model helps to improve the behavioural outcomes such as increased effort, involvement, and cooperation and organization citizenship. According to this HRM Model, Superior performance and behavioural outcomes can be achieved only after the achievement of three major HRM Outcomes Quality, Flexibility and Commitment. Guest Models Suggests that: Only when a coherent strategy, directed towards these four policy goals, fully integrated into business strategy and fully sponsored by line management at all levels is applied, will the high productivity and related outcomes sought by industry be achieved (Guest, 1990, p.3 78). And also he added that, HRM policies are not only concentrating with selection and providing training, it can also anticipated achieving HRM policy goals. This model is mainly concentrating on individual needs than the collective workforce. Some of the HRM practices of this Guest HRM model are selection rewards, job design, involvement and appraisals. Task2 (a) Human resource planning is the main process of reviewing requirement of the human resources in the organization. The need of employees in the organization are the important factors of human resource planning , in which areas we need them ,what are the skills do we need from them, how long and when does the employees are needed. Recruiting right number of people in the right time and at the right place is the very important factor of human resource planning. A framework that helps to develop organizational skills as well as employees personal, knowledge and the abilities are said to be the Human Resource Development. Vodafone Recruitment in Vodafone takes place in two ways external recruitment and internal recruitment. Internal recruitment is nothing but promoting the skilled people to the important posts in the Company or assigning project those are on bench. External recruiting is recruiting people from outside externally by giving advertisements. In this stage initially they will identify the necessity of the people and what are the positions that are to be filled. While giving the adverts along with the job title they describe the position of the job, responsibilities and its role in the company, details of benefits and salary given to them, whether job is on a contract or permanent. The advertisement has to be given in a very attractive way to attract the applicants to apply for the job that should also contain the application receiving final date. Vodafone Company after receiving the applications conducts a written exam for them. Written exam may have reasoning, verbal, aptitude and also technical questions. These are the questions to check the basic skills and knowledge of the applicant. This exam time is around one hour. This is one of the best way to select the skilled people among the numerous numbers of people. After the completion of written exam the candidates will be short listed and called for an interview. In Vodafone Company sometimes there may be two kinds of interviews conducted i.e., personal interview and technical interview. Technical interview will be conducted to know the technical skills of the candidate. This is one of the important round if the candidate applied for a post belongs to technical background. He will be posed the questions which are related to the job and asked if they have any relevent experience. Personal interview is the last stage. Apart from this sometimes telephonic interview is also conducted. This interview is held to know why he is applying for this particular position, why he has chosen particularly this company, what all the things he knows about the Vodafone Company. Also to test whether he suits for that particular position he have applied for and he will be able to fulfil all the responsibilities of that postion. (b) The same recruitment process the Vodafone is still following but with some changes. Now the company is going to recruit the people from university campuses. It is one of the best procedures for them to recruit the freshers and they can shape them into areas they are looking for or required. Earlier in the written test there were no negative marks for the wrong answers because applicant sometimes may just try the luck and selects one of the options to answer the question so it will become difficult to understand the skills of them. So, if there are negative marks for wrong answers then they only try to answer the questions if they know the answers exactly. Now the Vodafone company conducting group discussions as well. This will take around 30minutes. A particular topic is given to the members and they will be asked to discuss about the topic for certain specific time period. To test the candidate leadership qualities group discussions are conducted . Also once they come into into the company they will have to work in a team. So, to examine how good they are performing in a team the group discussions are very important. In todays world the job is not constant and the members around us may change. Candidate has to work and get along with different types of the people and in the different kind of environment. So Group discussions are most important in this way. There are not many changes in the process of recruitment but only a little change gives very good results. (c) Vodafone Company follows some of the selection practices and procedures. In these panel members, Hr managers, Company managers have some responsibilities in the selection and the recruitment process. In selecting a member , the company manager is responsible. He should make sure that all the members are involved in the process of recruitment. He should be up to date with the selection framework and the policies of council. He has to inform to the Hr managers that there is a vacancy to be filled. The legal frame work which means while selecting a member into the company there should not be any discrimination. Discrimination in grounds of caste, religion, gender, disability, or race is unlawful. There is direct discrimination as well as indirect discrimination. Direct discrimination which means when a particular person is favoured less than all the others. Indirect discrimination which means it occurs when the particular group may cause disadvantage to the position. There is a positive discrimination as well such as guarantee jobs only for disabled employees, taking interviews only for the people those who are not short listed etc. (d) Selection is a very important process in any organization because if the process of selection is not good and the proper skilled people are not recruited which will affect the profits of the company. Hiring process of Vodafone is very good because of which it is one of the leading mobile company in the world. The selection procedure has to be in such a way that the member selected should be suitable for the position. They spend lot of money by the company during selection process. So, there must not be any kind of delays while conducting them and they must be organized in a well planned manner. Hr department is the responsible for filling a job in any organization. They will inform to their supervisors and the line managers to fill the position stating the rules and regulations for that particular position. Task3 (a) Reward Management and Performance appraisals are very important for Vodafone employees to improve their performance, which is the key for company performance. It will help them to identify their faults and area for improvement, and to take necessary action to achieve them. As the company performance is depends on the employee performance, it is very important to monitor the employees performance and reward to motivate them to perform better. 360 degree feedback is the method, which provides an opportunity for every employee to receive their performance feedback, which collected from co-workers, supervisors, customers, manager and also from other discipline staffs. It is very famous now a day, as it is one of the accurate assessment method than others. Because the feedback received from one person is less effective than feedback received from many people and areas. Ratings are much more accurate as it taken from various people and it is purely depends on the employee performance. This 360 degree feedback helps the employees to measure themselves and helps to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and also areas for improvement. Normally employee gives feedback by filling the questionnaire model. It is a motivational element and which has been accepted by many organization and its participants. This feedback also helps both the employees as well the organization depending on the feedback received. Rewards are awarded to employees according to their performance rating and it was awarded on regular basis in Vodafone Company. This system also helps Vodafone to express their views in achieving companys success. Employment feedback and customer feedback both are the very important things in any organization. Employee performance can be assessed from co-employees, supervisors, managers, customers feedback that, how the candidate performed during the period of time. These may include his/her achievements, career plan, skills, problems, areas for improvement, etc. Some employees are directly talk and interact with the clients, so the clients feedback are also sometime important to reward the employee. Not only them, all other employees are also important to discuss with their future plans and the strategies. The organization must provide solutions for negative feedback, which raised from employees. This strategy also helps the organization to provide best service for their customers. Well performed employees are rewarded annual appraisal with next level promotion, pay rise or instant prizes, etc., which will encourage the employee as well as motivate others to perform enthusiastically. Also appraisal system enables the employee to see in which area he/she needs to improve in order to step u p his/her career which also simultaneously improve organization performance. Therefore, the organization is also able to identify and provide necessary training for their employees for their career development. (b) Exit procedure will take place when an employee is resigned or layoff his job. Once the employee decides to leave the organization, he/she must provide written resignation letter his/her department manager for approval and also it facilitates department manager to plan for the future workload or new recruitment well in advance. Then it is department managers responsibility to forward that resignation letter to HR department. HR looks every option to avoid resignation as the new recruitment is not cost effective. If no way, then HR confirms and sends a letter to candidate with last employment date according to accepted notice period. During the notice period the candidate must work or handover the remaining task to someone as directed by his/her supervisor. When an employee leaves the organization, he/she must be treated equally. Different exit methods are followed my different companies, but these are mainly to know the reason why he/she wants to leave the company whether is it a personal reason or due to non-satisfaction such as company rules, salary or any other reasons. The main important reason for exit interview is to update or correct the internal management errors within the organization. HR is responsible for arranging exit interview for that employee. HR department is got some responsibilities as well in exit procedure. To gather the information of the employee they will send a questionnaire to employee that includes what is the reason the employee is leaving the organization and get feedback from him/her. Exit interview will be conducted to collect the information from the candidate who may be useful to improve the organization growth by rectifying management problems, if any. While recruiting, majority of the organization has the contract with its employees. The employee needs to sign on bond paper mentioning that he/she will work for that organization for certain duration without taking any other job outside the organization. In this case, the exit procedure may be totally differs, as the employee breaching his conditions he/she may be liable to pay for notice period or compensation if he/she decides to leave the organization during contract tenure. (c) Redundancy takes place when the taskforce is reduced or reorganized due to the changes in business environment such as recession, relocation, downturn workload etc. The selection criteria for redundancy are mainly helpful for an organization, when it needs to dismiss number of employees from the pool of employees. In this case, the criteria of selection had been clearly set and defined in the organization policy, which applicable to every employee of the organization. The representatives of the employees also must have to agree with these criteria. Redundancy must be approved by the employer and HR must inform to their all group of employees with reason for redundancy. Management must look every option to avoid redundancy, as the recruitment is very expensive now days. If any group of the employees were performing the same work then, there will a chance for inter changeability of the work. The selection criteria for redundancy must follow the combinations of individual Performance, Q ualifications, skills, time records and attendance, flexibility, capability, special skills, disciplinary record, length of service, etc and every employee of the organization must be treated equally. Selection of employee must be as fair selection. Some of the criterias might raise some problems like disability grounds, sex, religion, maternity grounds, race, trade unions and other legal issues. Therefore the organization must have the clear policies and making procedures for fair redundancy selection.

Doctor Faustus as Tragic Hero Essay -- Doctor Faustus Essays

Doctor Faustus as Tragic Hero Doctor Faustus died a death that few could bear to imagine, much less experience.   After knowing for many years when exactly he would die, he reached the stroke of the hour of his destiny in a cowardly, horrid demeanor.   Finally, when the devils appeared at the stroke of midnight, tearing at his flesh as they draw him into his eternal torment, he screams for mercy without a soul, not even God Himself, to help him.   However, what to consider Doctor John Faustus from Christopher Marlow's dramatic masterpiece The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus is a very debatable issue.   For example, one can see that he threw his life away for the sake of knowledge, becoming obsessed with the knowledge that he could possess.   In this case, he is unarguably a medieval tragic hero.   However, when considering the fact that he died for the sake of gaining knowledge, pushing the limits of what is possible in spite of obvious limitations and, eventually, paying the ultimate penalty, he could be considered a Renaissance martyr.   These two points of view have their obvious differences, and depending on from what time period one chooses to place this piece of literature varies the way that the play is viewed.   However, the idea of considering him a martyr has many flaws, several of which are evident when considering who Faustus was before he turned to necromancy and what he did once he obtained the powers of the universe.   Therefore, inevitably, the audience in this play should realize that Faustus was a great man who did many great things, but because of his hubris and his lack of vision, he died the most tragic of heroes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Christopher Marlowe was born on February 6, 1564 (Discoverin... ...is truly merciful because he forgave such a blasphemous heathen as Faustus.   Faustus could have become an example for all of mankind and proven that if he could be forgiven, then all could be forgiven.   However, because he was stubborn, ignorant, and blind, he refused to see that he was never truly damned until he was drug by the devils into the heart of hell itself.   Works Cited: Discovering Christopher Marlowe http://swc2.hccs.cc.tx.us/HTMLS/ROWHTML/faust/index.htm Henderson, Philip.
